Wessex Saddlebacks are listed as 'critically endangered' by the Rare Breeds Trust of Australia. They are a striking looking black pig with a white belt, extending from one fore-foot over the shoulder to the other resembling a saddle. The ears are lopped forward. Why such a rare breed? Basically to help maintain genetic diversity in this increasingly mass produced and homogenised world, and they also taste much better than the commercial hybrids.
Of course, our pigs free range on fresh pastures and are fed quality natural foods free of chemical additives. They also have access to clean water, wallows, shelters and they are also protected from predators. They do not have their teeth 'clipped' or tails 'docked', and are not 'nose ringed' either, so they can behave as nature intended. Stress free, quality assured, happy and healthy pigs - just the way they should be.
Finally, the Wessex Saddleback pig is an ideal smaller pig that is well suited to small acreage production. They have one of the friendliest temperaments making them ideal for family farms.
